Portugal voted the best golf destination in the world for the third time
Portugal was chosen on Saturday as the best golf destination in the world for the third time in a row, receiving the prize awarded by the World Golf Awards, which awards the ‘Oscars’ of the sport.
In a ceremony held at the Conrad Algarve Hotel at Quinta do Lago, Portugal once again was selected ahead of destinations such as England, Scotland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Wales, France, Germany, Spain, Turkey or Italy that competed in the same category.
“Portugal will continue to work on attracting new segments [golf course professionals, corporate golf, women and young people] and supporting the flagship event: Portugal Masters, already scheduled for September 21 to 24 2017″, emphasized Turismo de Portugal, President, Luís Araújo.
There are currently 91 golf courses in Portugal (of which 66 are 18 or 27 holes). The Algarve is the region with the largest number of golf courses (44%), followed by the region of Lisbon (17.58%).
According to the organization, the World Golf Award “aims to stimulate the golf tourism industry and results from the online voting of professionals related to the sector, specialized tour operators and the media dedicated to golf, but also the public in general.”
