Portugal Golf Holidays – Algarve had the best February since 2007

Portimão, Algarve. Algarve had the best February since 2007

Portimão had the biggest growth in the Algarve

The Association of Hotels and Tourism Enterprises of the Algarve (AHETA), with headquarters in Albufeira, reports that the February 2023 occupancy rate for tourist accommodation units in the Algarve was 48.7%, the highest February occupancy rate in the past 16 years.

According to the data released, the occupancy rate for February was 5.4% higher than the same month in 2019 and 2.1% higher than the same month in 2020, the last month before the Covid-19 restrictions.

According to AHETA, the markets that most contributed to the growth witnessed were the national market with +1.4pp, the Dutch market with +0,9pp, and the British market with +0.5pp in comparison to February 2020.

As said by AHETA, the highest gains compared to 2020 were seen in the regions of Portimão (+16.5pp), Monte Gordo (+11.1pp), and Tavira (+7.2pp) in February.

The signs are clear: the Algarve tourism sector is bouncing back from the economic crisis brought by the Covid-19 pandemic. After a tough period of two years, the Algarve is recovering well, with a good start in 2023, but there is a long way to go in order to make a full recovery.

The Algarve has some of the best golf courses in Europe, like Monte Rei (considered the best in Portugal), Palmares, and Dom Pedro Old, all of them well ranked in Europe’s top 100 golf courses.

Falésia Beach, Algarve. Falésia Beach among the top 10 best in the world

Falésia Beach, in the Algarve, ranks 6th among the world’s best beaches

With its “rich red sand cliffs” and “a white sand beach that appears to continue on forever”, both of which lead to the “blue-green ocean”, Falésia beach in the municipality of Albufeira, on the Algarve, was voted number 6 in TripAdvisor’s annual list of the finest beaches in the world.

The Algarve beach has been a favourite of international platform users for a long time, and it is the only Portuguese beach to make the list. Compared to 2021, Falésia beach has risen 6 places.

One more thing to add to this impressive accomplishment: this beach was ranked the best among beaches in continental Europe.

A user’s comment, highlighted by TripAdvisor in a statement, says: “it’s a magnificent beach… the sun strikes the many tones of orange and yellow sand on the towering cliffs that reflect a warm colour. The sand on the beaches is a beautiful golden yellow. The water is perfect for bodyboarders and surfers since the waves pound the shore with a mild fury.

Falésia beach enjoys a prestigious location, between Albufeira and Vilamoura, close to two of the most famous tourist destinations in Portugal and some of the best golf courses in the country, like the famous Dom Pedro Old or the always popular Salgados golf course.

Falésia is often considered the most famous beach in Albufeira and attracts a huge amount of tourists every year.

Portugal Golf Holidays – Faro Airport will add new routes and new locations in the summer

Algarve. Faro Airport will have new routes and destinations

Faro Airport will have new routes and destinations

The management of Portugal’s international airport Gago Coutinho (ANA), in Faro, Algarve, has revealed that this summer, the airport will offer 18 new routes to 6 new locations, and 81 connections to 71 cities.

The airport manager in Faro believes that the increased accessibility to the Algarve via flights will help to “consolidate the offer and regional and national tourism activities” during the peak season for visitors to the region.

The airline noted that the additional flights will help the “development of strategic markets”, and that “the primary issuing nations for Faro airport, United Kingdom, Ireland, and France, enhanced their supply of seats” compared to the summer of 2019.

Turismo do Algarve‘s president João Fernandes deemed this a “clear proof” of “the trust of tour operators and airlines in the Algarve destination”.

The 6 new destinations, Aarhus (Denmark), Rome (Italy), Strasbourg (France), Bilbao (Spain), and Jersey and Exeter (UK), will provide “almost 85,000 more seats” to Faro, as noted by João Fernandes, who highlighted the significance of the 18 new routes announced by ANA for the period from April to October.

In response to a question regarding whether or not the Algarve would surpass its record-breaking visitor numbers from 2019, João Fernandes said that there are encouraging signs in that direction, but that “cautious optimism” is needed, given the current economic and geopolitical situation.

The Algarve is the most famous golf holiday destination in Portugal and has some of the best golf courses in the country, like Monte Rei or Dom Pedro Old.
