A Golf Tournament in Costa Del Sol and Madrid , at the same time

Chaparral Golf Club from in Costa Del Sol and the Centro Nacional de Golfe from Madrid joined forces in the development of a unique event. A virtual golf tournament was held at the same time at both facilities.

The tournament took place in the academy of both clubs, thanks to Toptracer. Thanks to their technology, participants were able to experience golf in a high-fidelity virtual environment, simulating the Old Course at St Andrews, for many the most iconic golf course in Europe.

Players from a variety of golf clubs came together to celebrate the shared vision of advancing the sport’s evolution at the event. In addition, authorities from Mijas Town Hall gave their support to the event at Chaparral Golf Club, underscoring its importance to the community support of the sport in general.

Golf Courses Under Renovation

Mataleñas Golf course in Santander, northern Spain, is under renovation. The project aims to improve the overall visitor experience. All greens, bunkers, and short game areas of the course will be tackled. The driving range roof and lighting will also be renovated. The work should be concluded by next spring.

La Rasa de Berbes Golf, in Asturias, finished the renovation of the green on the back 9.

Getting Into a New Trend

The opening of ‘Calma’, a new lounging area located on the 9th green to the 10th tee of the Links course at La Hacienda Links Golf Resort. It gives golfers the opportunity to sit back and enjoy spectacular uninterrupted views of the Mediterranean, Gibraltar, and the distant North African coastline while enjoying a delicious menu based on local Andalusian produce.

Open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. for golfers and 8:00pm to midnight for the general public. The new facility, built using the best bioclimatic practices and sustainable materials with a near-zero carbon footprint, offers a selection of freshly made tapas, snacks, and desserts for players to enjoy as well as inviting members and visitors to pause for fifteen minutes before continuing their rounds.

Should more courses follow suit?

Jon Rahm’s Golf Garden

Jon Rahm, a reference in Spanish, European and world golf, has inaugurated ‘El Jardín del Golf’, a recreational facility for children and adolescents admitted to the Niño Jesús University Hospital in Madrid.

Spain Golf – Alcanada wins Diamond Award at Tagmarshal Awards

Alcanada wins its third Diamond Award

The Alcanada Golf Club, in Mallorca, part of the Balearic Islands, has been honoured for the third time with the Diamond Award at the Tagmarshal Awards.

The award, given to Alcanada at the PGA Show in Orlando, Florida, was a climax to a fantastic 2022 that included the golf course’s hosting of the Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final last November. The success in the tournament led to its scheduled return to Alcanada later this year.

“The club’s primary focus is on enhancing the playing experience for its members at all times. Although we are well aware of the need of maintaining a steady pace of play for most players and the potential damage it may do if not handled properly, it has never been an issue here”, explains Alcanada Golf Club Director Kristoff Both.

“With the help of the Tagmarshal system, we’ve been able to improve our approach and anticipate any issues on the golf course, so our players can focus on taking in the beautiful scenery and pleasant Mallorcan weather”, added Kristoff Both.

The award recognises the club’s outstanding efforts in areas like the pace of play, player experience, and course optimization, all of which have helped establish it as a top location for golf’s most prestigious tournaments.

In fact, a round of 18 holes at Club de Golf Alcanada is 5 percent faster thanks to Tagmarshal’s revolutionary optimization technology, a significant benefit for a sport that is increasingly challenged by game rhythm issues.

The Tagmarshal Awards were established in 2019 to honour the best of the 500+ golf courses that have partnered with the company. That year, Alcanada took home its first Diamond Award; in 2021 and 2022, it received two more.

By winning a third prize, Alcanada now ranks among the world’s top 30 golf courses, joining such illustrious institutions as Pebble Beach, Ballybunion, Erin Hills, Pinehurst, and Portugal’s West Cliffs.

Spain Golf – Empordà Golf will host the Empordà Challenge and the Challenge Costa Brava of the European Challenge Tour next October

Empordà Golf will host the Empordà Challenge and the Challenge Costa Brava of the European Challenge Tour next October

The European Challenge Tour announced today that two events in Spain, the Empordà Challenge and the Challenge Costa Brava, will take place in consecutive weeks at Empordà Golf this October.

The Empordà Challenge will be held from 14th to 17th October, while the Challenge Costa Brava will take place from Tuesday 19th to Friday 22nd October. The latter will mark the end of the regular season of the Road to Mallorca, determining the field of forty-five players for the Grand Final of the Rolex Challenge Tour sponsored by The R&A from 4 to 7 November.

Empordà Golf Course is the former venue for the European Tour and European Tour Qualifying School events, and the two Challenge Tour tournaments will be played on the Links Course, which underwent major renovation works during 2020. These two back-to-back events replace the Hainan Open and Foshan Open in China, which were cancelled earlier this month due to the continuing effects of the global pandemic.

“We thank Empordà Golf and the promoter, JGolf, for their help in bringing these events to fruition. It was important to us to provide our members with these replacement tournaments to ensure that playing opportunities were maximised at an important time of the season and, having enjoyed a long and successful relationship with Javier Gervás and his team, we knew it would be possible to organise a solution with their help,” said Jamie Hodges, head of Challenge Tour.

“Empordà Golf has stood the test of time in terms of hosting professional events and we are excited to spend two weeks in Spain at such a wonderful venue,” adds Hodges.

“When the slot on the Road to Mallorca calendar came up, we worked hard to help cover those crucial two weeks on the calendar. We knew that Empordà Golf was keen to go one step further in terms of the professional tournaments it has hosted and so we set out to host the last two Challenge Tour tournaments before the Grand Final,” explains Javier Gervás, general manager of JGolf.

“They have made a great effort and I am sure they will be rewarded. We are now going to have two decisive tournaments in Spain this season with international coverage that will put Empordà Golf in the world golfing spotlight,” adds Gervás.

“The decision to hold the Empordà Challenge confirms the efforts being made by all the clubs on the Costa Brava to improve their facilities and become a world-class sports destination,” says Emilio Cuatrecasas, President of Empordà Golf Club.

“It is also worth noting that the growing popularity of these international tournaments is driving many young people to play golf, and the clubs are feeding not only their energy but also an updated vision of the sport that will bring considerable progress in the sporting, social and environmental fields,” adds Cuatrecasas.

The Empordà Challenge and the Challenge Costa Brava will be the second Spanish swing of the Road to Mallorca 2021 after the Challenge de España and the Challenge de Cádiz, held at the Real Club de Golf Novo Sancti Petri last June.

The Empordà Challenge and the Challenge Costa Brava will be supported by the Challenge Tour, Empordà Golf, Girona Provincial Council through the Costa Brava Tourist Board, the Royal Spanish Golf Federation and Kyocera. The promoter and organiser is JGolf.
